| dc.description | A study was conducted with calves that were fed in drylots vs range raised steers. Screenings were studied as another source of feed for calves. Cropping by-products such as 'screenings' might be available in abundance but have little cash value. At this writing, most feed went out of state. Range calves were deemed stressed whereas drylot calves were not. A mix of screenings and other grains was recommended. Continuing to feed calves for a longer time frame to gradually acclimate them to their new environs produced less stressed calves and produced increased income beyond added labour and costs. Probiotics appeared to be helpful for those calves that were already stressed. | |
