The borer problem causing destruction of Green Ash trees in North Dakota shelter belts ws so great that it limited it's use in the field and farm stead as wind breaks in North Dakota, South Dakota and in Montana. Borers in green ash are ysually the carpenterworm, Prionoxystus robi niae (Peck), and the ash borer, Podosesia syringae Harris, also known as the lilac borer. These native insects have probably become more abundant as supplies of host material have increased. The article addresses the insect itself, the problem, the situation in 1972, it's control and the reduction of it's impact.
