Abstract

Stadia are increasingly being seen as tools of urban regeneration. Once regarded as single entities of limited interest beyond specific uses, they are now seen as having the potential to attract different groups at different times for different events. Having people using the spaces within and around a stadium is considered successful. Having people using the site for multiple reasons on a daily basis is going above and beyond expectations of stadia design. This design will help to create a new dimension of sports venue design in America. The stadium will be designed as a mixed-use matrix which will include such amenities as retail spaces, restaurants, and outdoor spaces. These types of areas are critical pieces of a community; they help to bring a community together by giving them a common place. The design will serve as a gathering place both during event and non-event times. New life will be given to the riverfront, with redesigned river-walks, gathering areas and green spaces all being incorporated in the design. This project will create an icon for the city of Saint Paul that will serve as a basis for regeneration in the downtown district.
