dc.descriptionErgot is a disease of both grasses and grains in North Dakota. This disease is caused by a fungus, Claviceps purpurea. It's toxicity is traceable to its content of alkaloids. These alkaloids cause various responses when consumed by or administered to an animal. The symptoms of ergot poisoning in livestock is given. Milk production in heifers may be reduced as a result, also. Several trials are reviewed. The question regarding toxicity buildup over time of low levels of ergot contamination was cited. In 1971, there was not any known treatment for this disease.
