Abstract
Description
Fallowing is practiced to increase soil water supply for the crop after fallow. But water must penetrate at least a foot below the soil surface of moldboard-plowed fallow to be "safe" from evaporation 108S. Time interval between tillage of fallow to control weeds did not alter the amount of evaporation loss. When available water to 48-inch depth exceeded 4 inches the first spring of the 21-month fallow period, precipitation storage efficiency thereafter was essentially zero.
