Three Interesting Items at the NDSU Archives

Abstract

The NDSU Archives preserves millions of historical artifacts for current and future generations. This short video presents examples of three interesting items a person can discover at the Archives.

1. Lawrence Welk’s Accordion. Lawrence Welk hosted the popular variety program The Lawrence Welk Show from the 1951 to 1982. A native of Strasburg, North Dakota, Welk performed in big bands across the Dakotas before taking his musical talent to the television.

2. NDSU Bison Trivia Game. This “official” board game was created in 1995. Its specially-designed board features ads from local businesses. Most of the trivia questions test participants’ knowledge of NDSU Athletics teams, but some focus on general history of the university.

3. NDSU’s Oldest Rare Book. The NDSU Archives staff are responsible for the careful preservation of rare artifacts, and as of 2019, “The Gouerment of Cattel” is the oldest book in their collection. Published in London in 1637, the book is written in Old English and includes step-by-step instructions for taking care of cattle. The book’s linen pages ensure that the words will be clear for years to come.

This video was created to help celebrate American Archives Month in October 2018 and used to market the NDSU Archives through various outlets of NDSU Libraries.
