Two studies are addressed in this article regarding the effects of sunflower oil and methyl ester when used in diesel engines. The first took place in the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the North Dakota State University. The second took place at the Allis-Chalmers Engine Division in Harvey, Illinois. Areas covered in this paper are: fuel properties and characteristics, performance tests on engines in Fargo, N.D., performance tests on engine at Harvey, Illinois. Thermal efficiency, volumetric energy, fuel flow, flow resistance, density and viscosity of test fuels, compression ratios, refinement percentages, the smoke number and exhaust temperature are topics which appear in these studies and paragraphs.
