Measured soil losses were greatest on the bare treatment and least on the undisturbed plots. Application of straw mulch reduced erosion by 66 per cent over the bare condition. As vegetation becomes established on surface mined areas, the erodibility of recently top soiled sites will be significantly reduced.North Dakota State UniversityRunoff and Erosion Characteristics of a Revegetated Surface Mined Site in Western North DakotaArticle
