The Libraries will be hosting an event in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month on September 24, 2020 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at the Main Library on campus. Prairie St. John’s will be sponsoring the event.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month. There is no single cause to suicide. Several factors can increase a person’s risk for attempting or dying by suicide. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to suicide, while reminding students that a positive state of mind starts with being good to yourself.
Mental health affects how we cope with stress and overcome challenges. Given the unprecedented times 2020 has brought, taking care of our mental health to better our daily lives is important as ever. At the event, students and other community members can take an online screening on their personal device to determine if they are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. There will be take-home resources available on ways to ground yourself when you are feeling stressed or anxious, materials available from NDSU Libraries on mental health, and other helpful resources. COVID-19 prevention guidelines will be in place.
We can help prevent suicide by learning to help ourselves, help others, seek consultation from trained providers, and seek hospital care when necessary. Call the NDSU Counseling Center at 701-231-7671 when seeking help, visit NDSU Libraries for a safe space and to access information, and get active at the NDSU Wellness Center as a healthy lifestyle can help prevent mental health problems.
