What Are NDSU Librarians up to in the Summer?

Success go get it written on chalkboard

Ah…summertime when a librarian’s thoughts turn to reading their favorite books under the shade of a tree….well, maybe on their own time. During the summer the Libraries are a busy hive of activity as we undertake large-scale projects that are difficult to do while classes are in session. Across the board we are evaluating our collections, both physical and electronic, to make sure they are accessible – whether that means in good condition and in the correct physical location or easily found using our online resources. We also spend a lot of time doing outreach to other student services on campus to collaborate with and prepare for a busy start to the fall semester providing orientations and essential information to incoming undergraduates, graduate students and new faculty.

Behind the scenes, our systems staff are working on upgrades to many of the platforms used to access the Libraries’ resources including our website, catalog, and institutional repository. We are also beginning an exciting project thanks to the generosity of the Alumni Foundation which provided us with a Libraries Endowment grant to digitize the Spectrum. Both the NDSU Archives and the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC) staff use summer to catch up on processing new archival collections while playing host to, and assisting, the many people who travel to Fargo to do genealogical research. In addition, the GRHC will be filming throughout the summer in Emmons, Logan, & McIntosh Counties in collaboration with Prairie Public Broadcasting for the forthcoming Women Behind the Plow documentary. We are also working on producing our first ever Libraries Magazine to share the special events, achievements and programming that are happening at the Libraries.

While the Libraries may seem quiet during the summer, we usually find ourselves in a race to complete our various major projects in time to welcome students and faculty back to campus in the fall to a Library that has been quietly – but steadily - improving its accessibility, spaces, and services for the NDSU community.
