Biography

James Henry Carter was born Owego, New York in 1862 to Andrew and Sarah A. (Grant) Carter. Married Anna Stewart (1862-1942) in 1882 and they had two children, Nina Belle Carter Van Ostrand and Clarence Andrew Carter. He and a friend went to Wahpeton, North Dakota in 1883 but then went back to New York. He came back to farm and work in a blacksmith shop on a farm six miles from Wahpeton. They finally established a residence around 1891 in Belford, North Dakota. However, by the 1920s he and family had moved back to Candor, New York. He and his family lived there until he died in 1941.
