History

The Fargo Retired Teachers Club began September 1955 as a social club of women teachers, retired from the Fargo School System. The idea came from Jennie McCloud Johnson. A constitution was drawn up and adopted in September 1960. As retired teachers' associations developed throughout the nation, North Dakota organized a state association through the efforts of Miss Signe Hanson and other state leaders. The Fargo group then became affiliated with the state association. In 1965-1966 the constitution was updated, and a new one adopted in May 1966. The club's name was then changed to the Fargo Retired Teachers Association. Membership was extended to anyone who was 55 years or older who at sometime had been employed as a teacher in the schools of the nation at any educational level.
