History

Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The first meeting was held on December 5, 1776. It was the first college society to bear a Greek-letter name. A chapter was organized at Yale in 1780 and Harvard in 1781. Women were accepted as members in 1875 and African-Americans in 1877. The first Greek organization at North Dakota Agricultural College was Alpha Mu, organized in 1904.

The Alpha Association was formed as a way to coordinate the activities of Phi Beta Kappa chapters throughout North Dakota.
