Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Cass County Superintendent of Schools records consist of official forms submitted by the local school districts in Cass County to the Superintendent’s office. The original organization of the records by the superintendent’s office has been retained. Arranged in numeral sequence by the school district number, the records thereafter are strictly in chronological order. The type of documents for each year normally include the Clerk’s Annual Report; Poll Book, Tally List and Official Returns; Certificate of Election; and the Treasurer’s Report. The files do not contain any correspondence or documents sent from the superintendent’s office. Also, not all school district records are included in the collection. It is assumed records prior to 1905 and the remaining school districts are still in the superintendent’s office. For available historical sketches on individual Cass County school districts consult Rural Cass County: the Land and People, published by the Cass County Historical Society, 1976. (Call number: Inst. Rm. F642.C34 R8). Also, the Mattie M. Davis file (SC 1146) contains a copy of her 1926 speech, “Some Pioneer Work in Education”, which is her recollections while serving as Cass County superintendent of school from 1896 to 1910.
