Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Fargo Forum Photograph Collection consists primarily of images published in the Fargo Forum newspaper. It is arranged into four series; the Fargo Forum Series, Fargo, N.D. Series, Moorhead, Minn. Series, and Topical Series. Each series is arraigned alphabetically by topic. A number of the images were unfixed and beginning to deteriorate. To preserve these images and protect the rest of the collection, they were digitized, removed from the collection, and replaced with a photocopy. This collection contains all photographs donated by the Forum that are under the size of 11 x 14 in. The larger sizes were placed into three separate folio collections, Fargo, N.D. Folio Photograph Collection (Folio 71), Moorhead, Minnesota Folio Photograph Collection (Folio 73), and North Dakota Folio Photograph Collection (Folio 72). The Fargo Forum Series shows images of the Forum Publishing Co. building, both exterior and interior, and staff portraiture. Many are of the Pulitzer Prize winning staff that reported on the 1957 Fargo tornado. Some of the highlights of the Fargo, N.D. Series include a number of aerials, mostly taken between 1950 and 1980. There is a nice set of images dealing with young people “cruising” Broadway in 1987. The Building & business file contains a number of halftone prints used for publishing as well as some original photographs from the 1880s and the 1980s. There are some harness racing scenes in the Fairs & fairgrounds file. The Fargo City Hall and the exterior and interior of the Fargo Arena are located in the Government & public facilities file. The Diamond Jubilee file contains only halftone images of parades and events from the 1950 Fargo Diamond Jubilee. The Schools file contains a print of the Fargo North High School roof collapse on March 3, 1966. The Moorhead, Minn. Series has a Downtown file that contains both aerial and street scenes around the downtown Moorhead area. Most of these aerials were taken after urban renewal. The General file is an eclectic mix of images including aerials over the American Crystal Sugar plant. The Hjemkomst file contains a view of Robert Asp building his Viking ship replica and it sailing in the Duluth, Minn. Harbor. The Topical Series deals with all other topics that do not fit in any of the previously series. They are a mix of both towns and topics arranged alphabetically. Highlights of this series include a number of aerials over farmsteads around the state taken in 1954. There is a nice aerial over the Northern Pacific Roundhouse at Dilworth, Minn. Some scenes of drifted top soil taken during times of drought, can be found in the Erosion file. The Hillsboro, N.D. has an image of a campground near the Red River. The Lakes & rivers file has an aerial over Crown Butte Dam reservoir and horseback riders crossing the Little Missouri River. Carl Ben Eielson, Rev. Frederick B. Bartlett, Rev. Henry Douglas Atwell, Gov. William Langer’s jury from 1934, Hal Davies, Bobby Vee and Roger Maris, are among those featured in the People file. The Railroad file contains an unidentified derailment scene. The Valley City, N.D. file has an aerial over the N.D. Conservation Training Center at Lake Ashtabula. And the West Fargo, N.D. file has two aerials, one over a residential area along the Sheyenne River and one over Bonanzaville.
