Scrapbook of Mrs. Shely, ca. 1800's

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 15

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The John J. Shely Family Papers have been organized into two series: Correspondence and Subject files. The Correspondence Series is arranged chronologically and consists of letters of Mr. Shely to his wife Anna from 1872 to 1890. There is only one letter from Anna to Mr. Shely. The letters related incidents in his life in the Red River Valley and his home at Reids Landing. The 1954 to 1956 correspondence is with John Shely's son Walter concerning the family and the family papers. The Subject Files Series contain various family material and mementos. The title agreement on the Rainy Lake Island is between David A. Melrose, and George S. Barnes and Mr. Shely. The autobiographical letter of Mr. Shely is a nine page typed copy which was originally written on May 15, 1898 in Minneapolis. It is a very good account of his life especially after leaving home. The newspaper clippings are few in number with the later clippings on the Walter Shellys in Florida. The scrapbook of Mrs. Shely dates from the 1800's and includes mainly poetry and general articles with only several articles on the Davis family and the Red River Valley area. Of note is the cover of the album. (Copyright, 1876) showing Santa Claus at various tasks. The wedding announcements are evidently of various family friends.
