Scope and Contents

From the Collection: Nancy Pearson’s Lawrence Welk Photograph Collection includes a wide variety of images that document Lawrence Welk’s career, members of his musical family, his wife Fern and a number of honors he received. The Lawrence Welk Series includes a variety of portraits of Welk including a series of six color images taken by Scherlings Studio of Fargo. There are also a number of Welk posed with an accordion and of him and his wife Fern. Others include a caricature of Welk riding a bicycle powered by ‘bubble power,’ and Welk standing beside a number of automobiles, standing beside a statue of himself, and a nice group shot of him and the North Dakota congressional delegation and Gov. Bill Guy and wife Jean, taken in the U.S. Senate dining room in 1972. The Welk Orchestra and Performers Series includes individual portraits of several of performers on the television program. A number also include Lawrence Welk. There are two images of the entire orchestra, as well as Welk with a number of children on the stage, of the Christmas show and a taping session. The Topical Series includes a small number of prints of Welk with several awards or the award itself, Welk in an automobile as the grand marshal of the Rose Bowl Parade, and of a Rose Bowl Parade float with Welk, Alice Lon and the Lennon Sisters on the float, and beside it are two young men walking, holding a banner with ‘President’s Trophy’ label. There is also a reproduction of the Ludwig Welk family (Lawrence’s parents) seated outside their farm home at rural Strasburg, N.D.
