Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
The Agnes Jardine Papers document her involvement in musical affairs, both at the state and national level. The papers have been organized into two series, correspondence and subject files. In 2005 two scrapbooks were donated by Carolyn Nelson of Fargo that were found among the North Dakota Federation of Music Clubs but rightfully belong with the Jardine papers.
The Correspondence Series covers the period 1922 to 1924 when Mrs. Jardine was president of the North Dakota Federation of Music Clubs. It consists of both incoming and outgoing correspondence and appears quite complete. It has been arranged alphabetically following her original order. Many of the 1etters are pasted together. The correspondence relates entirely to routine federation business such as programs, projects, and visits to clubs, etc. They do give a very good view of the operations of the federation during these years.
The Subject Files Series material is also related mainly to the national and state music clubs. Included are convention programs (1926, 1938) for the North Dakota Federation of Music Clubs, a few executive board meeting minutes and various memberships, officer and club listings for the state federation, Mrs. Jardine's report for 1933-1935 to the national federation as its president as well as a historical article on the national federation. There are also copies of two newsletters sent to state members in 1923.
The newspaper clippings on the National Federation deal mainly with several of its national conventions. The newspaper clippings on the North Dakota Federation deal with several state conventions and programs. The Miscellaneous File contains a certificate of completion from the Grammar Department of the Fargo Public Schools for John Alexander Jardine (1896), several poems, a resolution, and several financial reports of the state federation.
The two scrapbooks, a 2005 addition, document the 1933 biennial convention of the National Federation of Music Clubs held at Minneapolis, Minnesota May 21-May 28, 1933. One scrapbook apparently was compiled by Mrs. Jardine and includes clippings of events for each day, including items about her with photographs of her published in the local newspapers. It was at this convention that she became president of the national federation. The other scrapbook contains an extensive collection of newspaper publicity on the convention that appeared in local newspapers and was compiled by the Convention Department of the Minneapolis Civic & Commerce Association.
