Oscar II—

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: The Scandinavian Royalty Images Collection contains over eighty postcards and stereographs collected by Ronald Olin over many years from a variety of sources. This collection contains images dating from 1900 to 2004. The majority of the images are of Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian royalty as well as a few pieces containing images of the entire European royal family. Many of the postcards have correspondence written on the back as well as different European postage stamps and postage marks. The collection is organized by country and then person, usually the reigning monarch. The four series are: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and European Royal Families Series. The Denmark Series is the smallest series in the collection. It contains images of Frederik VII and Christian X. This is the least documented of the Scandinavian countries in this collection. The Norway Series contains the most postcards and stereographs. It includes images of Haakon VII and Olav V to the present day king of Norway, Harold V and his family. The stereographs document the events surrounds the coronation of Haakon and Maud in Trondheim, Norway. The Sweden Series is a large series like the previous. There are images of four kings and their families as well as some Swedish princesses. The kings represented in this series include: Oscar II, Gustav V, Gustav VI Adolf, and Carl XVI Gustav. Images of Swedish monuments are also included in this series. The last series European Royal Families contains images of royalty outside of Scandinavia, although most are related through marriage, especially through the English royal family. This includes images of kings and queens of England, Spain, Germany, and more. This series not only contains postcards but a number of stereographs. One stereograph is of the Swedish-Norwegian royal family and two taken in Trondheim, Norway during the coronation of Haakon and Maud. Two additional items from the accession have been retained in the collection. There are three color portraits on cloth of Haakon VII, King of Norway; and Christian X, King of Denmark; and Gustaf V, King of Sweden. There is also a copy of Kongen Krones, published in 1906, issued likely in connection with the coronation of King Haakon and Queen Maud of Norway. Written in Norwegian (16 pages) it provides a history of Norway’s royalty and the kings that have had coronations in the Trondheim Domkirke (Cathedral) and includes images of past royalty.
