Scope and Contents

The Albert Hoiland Papers consists mostly of patents for his various inventions. The correspondence for 1931 consists of copies of reference letters to Governor Shafer concerning Mr. Hoiland's appointment to the North Dakota Board of Highway Commissioners which he did not receive. The land patent is for the land he homesteaded near Kathryn. The Patent Series contains the actual patents granted and other various related papers. The car guide and cow trainer files contain only promotional literature, and the flying machine patent is a typed copy. The freight car door file also includes a Canadian patent. The wild oats separator files are the most complete with its patent, articles and promotional literature. It also includes the actual patents from Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Argentina, and Australia.

Biography

Albert Hoiland was born April 23, 1869 at Rushford, Minnesota, the son of Aadne and Johanne Hoiland. The family came to Dakota and settled on a farm south of Valley City in Barnes County. In the 1890's he farmed in the Kathryn area, and later at Nome, North Dakota he became a distributor of windmill feed grinders. Mr. Hoiland became an active inventor, his first being a shutter for automobile radiators. In 1912 he developed his wild oats separator for which he received a patent. In 1914 he moved to Fargo and began to manufacture this and other inventions. During his career he received some 26 patents. He continued to live in Fargo except for a short employment during World War II in the tool room of NashKelvinator Company at East Lansing, Michigan. On June 6, 1897 he married Paula Horland of Fingal, North Dakota. She was born at Lanesboro, Minnesota on April 7, 1876. They had two children. Mr. Hoiland died on September 11, 1957 while visiting at Lansing, Michigan, and was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead, Minnesota. Mrs. Hoiland died July 11, 1959.

Mr. Hoiland was a North Dakota inventor. The collection contains various United States and foreign patents and promotional material for some of his inventions including wild oats separator (most extensive), valves, lignite grate, freight car door, flying machine (helicopter), cow trainer, car guide, and fan for explosive engines.
