Scope and Contents

The Fred A. Fleischman papers consist exclusively of photostatic copies of Mr. Fleischman’s farm account books for the period 1882 to 1920 consisting of about 450 pages. It is a detailed listing of all expenses and income for the entire period; thus an invaluable research collection for the financial aspects of farming during the period. The original ledgers were loaned in 1925 to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Division of Statistics and Historical Research where photostatic copies were made. The original ledgers were returned to the owner, Mr. Fleischman. The Account Book Series is broken down into various categories, including household expenses, dry goods and wearing apparel, farm expenses, hired help, building of home, and income which is subdivided into wheat and barley, potatoes, cream, and miscellaneous. An index to the various categories has been compiled.

Biography

Fred A. Fleischman was born January 8, 1853 at State Bridge, Oneida County, New York, of GermanEnglish parentage. At the age of 21 he moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he lived for five years. In 1879 he went to Kingsbury County, South Dakota, near Oldham, where he homesteaded in Whitewood Township. Two years later he returned to Chippewa Falls where he married Mary Alla Towne on February 16, 1881. She was born May 12, 1857. They returned to his farm, called Woodlawn Farm, where they resided until his retirement, after which his son, Floyd, took over its operation. Mr. and Mrs. Fleischman had ten children and were charter members of the Baptist Church in Oldham. Mrs. Fleischman died January 10, 1921, and Mr. Fleischman November 11, 1929.
