Scope and Contents

The Julius Sgutt Papers have been organized into two series: Correspondence and Subject files. The Correspondence Series is chiefly letters from Emanuel Sgutt describing life in France during World War I. There are a few letters from Simone Rossi and Mark Staples. The Subject File Series is mainly Sgutt family items. There are some World War I souvenirs including an autographed photo of French Minister of Commerce, Jean Rossi, a drawing by Simone Rossi, a photo album of the Cote d'Azur, and a photo of soldiers. Other items include newspaper clippings about the Sgutt family, the Certificate of Election of Julius Sgutt to the North Dakota Legislature, and his legal notebook. There are also certificates and appointments of Emanuel Sgutt, and the engagement announcements of Julius and Anna Sgutt.

Biography

Julius Sgutt was born May 21, 1867 in Romania. In 1886 he immigrated to the United States, living for a time in New York City, then settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Later, he operated a store in Perham, Minnesota, and in 1894 he married Annie Aved (Avedovitz), who emigrated from Russia. They had two children, Emanuel, a Fargo attorney, and Miriem, (Mrs. Mark Staples). In 1896 he moved to Harvey where he started the Chicago Store. The business expanded to stores in Manfred, Martin, Selz and Goodrich. In 1913 he purchased the North Dakota Drug Company chain of drug stores in eight cities. In 1914 the Chicago Store burned down, but was soon rebuilt. Mr. Sgutt retired in 1932 and moved to Fargo, where he died at the age 85 on April 16, 1953. He was buried in the Fargo Hebrew Cemetery. Mr. Sgutt was elected the first mayor of Harvey in 1906. In 1909 and 1911 he was the Wells County Representative in the North Dakota State Legislature. He was a member of Harvey Kiwanis Club, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of El Zagal Temple of the Shrine, and a member of Fargo Elks Lodge No. 260.
