History

The national organization of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War was organized in 1885. It was formed to remember the service of Union veterans of the Civil War and to stress patriotism by presenting patriotic programs and giving American flags to civic groups. The group provided assistance to aging veterans and turned out for their funerals. Members had to be lineal descendants of a Union Civil War veteran. Local groups were known as “tents,” and were named for women who actively assisted in some capacity during the war. The Fargo chapter was organized on July 29, 1926. It was designated Ida McKinley Tent Number 1. The first meeting was held in the Grand Army of the Republic rooms at the library with 25 members attending. The group was presented with a gavel once used by Theodore Roosevelt. A state department was organized in North Dakota when three chapters were formed in the state, the other two being Bismarck and Minot. The tent disbanded in 1937.
