Biography

The railroad originally sold land to Austin Corbin of New York in 1875. In 1881, the land was sold several times and was eventually acquired by A.J. Harwood, and the village was named for him. The post office opened in 1881 and the town was platted in 1882. The town began to grow as a general store opened, followed by a meat market, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a livery stable. There were two elevators in Harwood, and the White Lumber Company had a lumber yard. The Great Northern Railroad had a depot in Harwood. A bank was opened in 1919.
