Biography

Mary Barrett Still was born in Blufton, Wisconsin on October 14, 1866. Her maiden name was Mary Alma Barrett. Her father was Oscar Barrett. The family came to North Dakota in 1870 and settled near Fargo. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She married Richard J. Still in Fargo on November 18, 1884. Together they had twelve children. Mary and her husband homesteaded near Harwood in Cass County, moving to Englevale in 1886. They returned to Harwood in 1890 because of the drought, and Mr. Still worked as a carpenter. They moved to Sherbrooke in Steele County in 1899. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the M.B.A. Lodge, and the Pioneer Club. She passed away on February 20, 1914 in Fargo. She was survived by her husband, eight children, her father, and three sisters. After his wife’s death, Mr. Still moved to Blaine, Washington where he lived until his death in 1944.
