History

The Ivy Lodge of the Rebekah Assembly is the women's auxiliary to the fraternal lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The lodge was organized in Fargo on April 18, 1890 as the Mooreland Lodge No. 9. The first officers of the lodge were Mattie Ehrman as Noble Grand (president), Mrs. R. Ilin as vice grand, Mattie J. Monson as recording secretary, Mrs. G.A. Clark as financial secretary, and Mrs. J. Gordon as treasurer. On May 15, 1890 the lodge members voted to change their name to Ivy Lodge No. 1. As an auxiliary to a fraternal order, the Ivy Lodge devoted most of its time to social activities. However, at various times it was involved in charitable activities of benefit to the community. In 1890 the lodge established a Relief Committee to aid the needier families among its members. During the First and Second World Wars the lodge helped in the Red Cross war relief efforts. In 1924 and for several years afterwards the Ivy Lodge took part in the annual Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C. In 1925 Ivy Lodge began to make contributions to the Odd Fellows Home in Devils Lake, N.D. for retired Odd Fellow members. In 1928 the lodge started to donate to the Educational Foundation for Women, a program to extend financial aid to college women. In 1950 the Lodge contributed to the United Nation's People-to-People program by sending books overseas. In 1963 the Lodge contributed to the construction and funding of the Odd Fellows Eye Bank and Research Center. Also in that year they sent funds toward the establishment of the Schuyler Colfax Memorial Center which houses the records of the Odd Fellows order. In 1964 the Ivy Lodge dedicated a gate at the International Peace Gardens. Presently the main activities of the lodge have been with the educational foundation, the eye research center, and with the Odd Fellows Home.
