Scope and Contents
The Y.W.C.A. photograph collection was acquired as part of its papers. The collection was
organized into two series, Photographic prints and Slides. Each has been organized into topical
files.
In the Photograph Series the Activities file includes images of social events, children swimming and other activities and several of Vietnamese Americans. The Buildings file includes image of the YWCA’s early headquarters at 104 10th Street North, the Martin Hotel, and of two young women seated on bed with walls covered with portraits of movie stars. The People file contains portraits of Grace Leigh, Mrs. John Boler, and Kathleen Muscatel.
The Slides Series contains sixty images spanning from the 1970s and 1980s, although none are dated and none are identified. They have been organized by topic. The most extensive topics are images of the YWCA’s facilities, likely in the former Martin Hotel. Biography
The Fargo Y.W.C.A. was organized in 1906 with other groups to form the first Business and Professional Women’s Club in North Dakota. In 1931 it organized the YDL Business Girls’ Club, in 1932 the Friendship Club, and in 1938 the Tri C Club for “industrially employed girls.” After locating in nine different locations it purchased the Shields Hotel in 1942. There it headquartered until 1977 when it sold the building and leased space at the former Bison Hotel at 411 Broadway. At this time it also discontinued its long term residence program and now provided only emergency shelter assistance for women and girls. In the 1960s it changed its name to the Young Women’s Christian Organization of Fargo-Moorhead.
