Incomplete typed carbon copy of his article "Two Indian missions in Bishop Muench's diocese" (8 leaves) concerning two Catholic missions in N.D.: Little Flower, located on the Fort Totten Indian Reservation, and St. Ann's, Belcourt, N.D. Includes a description of conditions at the two missions and mentions the poverty of the Indian people, social relations between whites and Indians, and the celebration of St. Ann's Day. Also includes a newspaper article by Rev. Schmirler concerning early explorers in the Mouse River (Souris River) area in N.D., and his obituary.

Biography

Born near Edgar, Wisconsin on February 23, 1914, son of Anton J. and Louise (Gartmann) Schmirler. Ordained in 1942 in Fargo, N.D. by Bishop Aloysius J. Muench. He served Catholic parishes at Rugby, Blumenfeld, Page, Munich, Enderlin, and Wild Rice, N.D. Author of history books concerning Vesleyville and Page, N.D. Died at Vesleyville, North Dakota on July 23, 1982.
