Biography

Alexander McKenzie was born April 3, 1851 in Ontario, Canada. He immigrated to the United States and worked as a station hand and, later, as foreman of a construction crew for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He settled in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1873 where he was appointed sheriff of Burleigh County; he later served as Republican national committeeman for North Dakota. In addition to his persuasive role in North Dakota politics, McKenzie and several associates established the Alaska Gold Mining Company through which he was involved in questionable operations in Nome, Alaska during the early 1900s for which he served jail time.
