Biography
The “Farming of the West” photograph was taken by John R. Hamlin (1883-1903) between 1888 and 1889. It was taken on the Chaffee farm near Amenia, North Dakota. The photograph was used as part of an exhibit at the Chicago Worlds Far in 1893. From this exhibit, it was engraved and used for the design of the 2 cent Omaha stamp. The driver in the foreground, Ed Nybakken was born in Norway, May 12 1865, the son of Anders and Ingeborg Nybakken. He was married to Minnie Carlson. He died in Fargo on June 19, 1934.
