History
Fort Lincoln was established as a military post in 1895 near Bismarck, North Dakota. It was converted into an internment camp in 1941 to house German and Italian seamen who were captured in U.S. waters. After the U.S.’s entry into the war, the fort was turned over to the Department of Justice and expended. This expansion was for the accommodation of U.S. civilians of Japanese and German descent. At its height, the population was 1,518 prisoners and by the end of the war, there had between 3,000 and 4,000 prisoners reside at Fort Lincoln.
