Biography
George Gackle was born in Malozaroslowez (now Malojaroslowetz, Ukraine) in southern Russia on February 13, 1866 to John and Christina (Haier) Gackle. Not much is known about his family in Russia, other than they were farmers. George left Russia and landed in New York in either late 1885 or early 1886. He was naturalized in North Dakota on October 26, 1896.
By 1900 George had Married Lydia (maiden unknown at time of processing), though she was from the Kulm, North Dakota area and of German-Russian decent. They had seven children together, John, Fred, Martin, George Jr., Otto, Ernest, and the only daughter, Emma.
Lydia died January 24, 1915 in Minneapolis and is burned in Kulm, North Dakota. After she died, George left Kulm and left his sons to handle his business there. He moved to Minneapolis. While there, he did remarry, a Martha Hiller on June 25, 1919 (she would died July 1, 1931). George passed away August 18, 1924 in Minneapolis and is buried in Kulm, North Dakota.
The town of Gackle, North Dakota is named for him.
