Biography

Mr. Northrop was a native of Mottville, New York. He enlisted in the 149th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company G. The twenty letters, and one hand written diary, give a vivid glimpse into the life of a Civil War soldier. The letters follow the movements of his unit through Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. His unit was with the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 22nd Corps, Army of the Cumberland during the Atlanta Campaign. The correspondence includes Northrop’s activity in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Battle of Marietta, Battle of Peachtree Creek, and the Battle of Atlanta. After the war he eventually moved to Willow Lake Township, Steele County, N.D. where he died on August 16, 1908.
