Letters, typed summary of interview with Leonard Sackett concerning his father, James McDonald, an early settler at Caledonia, and the Grandin boats on the Red River. James McDonald died when a wagon load of wheat overturned and tipped into the Sheyenne River. Interview mentions Asa Sargeant and George Weston, early Traill County settlers. George Weston was later elected Register of Deeds and County Clerk. Letter from Neal Sargeant, son of Asa Sargeant, mentions steamboats "Alsop," "Pluck," and "Grandin" owned by the Grandins and used to haul grain.

Biography
Born at Upper Charles, New Brunswick, Canada. His mother, Grace McNair, was the second wife of James McDonald. The family moved to Missouri, later settled near Caledonia, N.D. Hugh worked on various farms, started farming on his father's place, later established his own farm. Married Elizabeth "Mamie" Irwin in 1882. Retired from farming in 1951 and moved to Caledonia, N.D. where he later died.
