Photocopy of typescript reminiscence by Mr. Engerud regarding growing up in Fargo, N.D. at the turn of the 20th century. He describes the town of Fargo, brother Karl, brother Louis and his Leghorn chickens, politics, assassination of President McKinley, and the Fargo water supply before the filtration plant in 1911. There is also a cover letter by Engerud to an Edith and Horace regarding his reminiscence. The letter is dated March 4, 1975.

Biography

Harold Engerud was born in 1895 in Fargo and was one of the three sons of Judge Edward Engerud. He was a career Army Officer. He served as an enlisted man in WWI. After the war he was in the Cavalry and then Armored Divisions. He was commissioned as an officer after WWI, and served in many capacities. He attended military advanced training schools. By WWII he was with the Third Army and served under General George Patton in the European theater through the conclusion of the war as a Colonel. He was in Supply and saw the freeing of the Nazi death camps. His last assignment was in the Philippines in 1948-49. He retired to San Jose, California. Engerud was a lifelong student of history; particularly in the Civil War. He loved to write and wrote many articles for the Civil War Round Table. He and his wife, Eleanor, spent their last years in Bloomington, Indiana. He died in 1976. He was survived by one daughter and five grandchildren.
