Biography

The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was founded in 1874 and would become one of the largest women’s groups in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Local chapters were called unions and while autonomous, they were closely tied to state and national unions. While membership declined after the passage of the 19th amendment, the WTCU still runs today and is involved with lobbying on a variety of social issues.
