Biography
The National Register of Historic Places, which includes nearly 30,000 properties in the United States, is this nation’s official list of historic properties worthy of recognition and preservation. It was established by the Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and is administered by the National Park Service. Five types of property can be nominated to and listed by the National Register: structures such as bridges and dams, buildings such as houses and churches, sites such as farmsteads, objects such as statues, and districts such as neighborhoods within cities.
Having a property listed on the National Register carries four benefits. First, the property receives recognition as a historic place. Second, tax incentives are made available to approved rehabilitation projects. Third, the property owner may apply for acquisition and development or survey and planning grants. Fourth, a review process keeps federally funded or authorized projects from damaging a listed property’s historic character. Being listed on the register does not give the federal government any rights to the property, however. The owner has no obligation to maintain the property’s historic character and may remodel, move, sell, or destroy it as he/she chooses.
To achieve listing on the National Register, it first must conform to criteria based upon the quality of significance in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, or culture. To be considered significant a property must meet at least one of the following: (1) The property must be associated with some important event of the past; or (2) it must be associated with an important person of the past; or (3) it must have yielded or be likely to yield important information about history; or (4) it must embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, method, or period of construction, represent the work of a master, possess high artistic values, or represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction. The property must also exhibit integrity to be listed on the National Register. Integrity involves the property’s physical completeness and historic authenticity.
