Biography

Samuel Hovland was born on May 14, 1848 in Skudeanos, Avaldsnes, Norway. He was the son of Endre Ellingsen, Weig and Olene Hansdatter. He came to America in 1875. He came to Dakota Terrritory in the late 1870s and was employed by the Grandin Farms. In was married to Malina Olson in 1880, and together they had three children. Malina died in 1886. He married a second time to Inger Egernes in 1891, and they had five children. They farmed in Elm River Township, Traill County, North Dakota. Sam Hovland died on January 30, 1920.
