Biography

The Sargent farms were located in Tower and Buffalo townships. The four sections were owned by Homer E. Sargent, jr. who was the general manager of Northern Pacific railroad. Homer Earle was born May 18, 1822 to Asa and Charlotte (Earle) Sargent in Leicester Massachusetts. Beginning in 1843, Homer would begin a long career working in railroads. First with the Boston and Albany then to the Boston and Worcester, and finally the Fargo and Southern Railroad and the Northern Pacific. In 1848, Homer married Maria Bottomly (who would died June 9, 1852). He then married Rebecca Eddy Wheaton on December 3, 1861 and they had four children. Due to his involvement with the Norther Pacific railroad and it laying a line through part of North Dakota, Sargent county is named after him.
