History

The project was also known as the Great Plains Shelterbelt project. It was a project designed to create windbreaks in the Great Plains beginning in 1934 as a result of the Dust Bowl. The project stretched from Canada to northern Texas and was estimated to cost $75 million over 12 years. The project was eventually transferred to the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and has continued at least through 2010 where much of the work being done is maintenance and establishment of new trees.
