Biography

Caledonia is located in Traill County, North Dakota. It was first called Goos River and was established as a post for the Hudson’s Bay Trading Company and their steamships. It became a boom town in the 1870s from these steamships. It also was along the stagecoach line that lead to Winnipeg, Canada. In 1875, it was designated as the county seat for Traill, however Hudson’s Bay closed all of their U.S. posts including the one in Caledonia. In addition, the new James J. Hill railroad went a different direction missing Caledonia and the steamboat industry soon disappear so the county seat was moved to Hillsboro in 1896. The current population of Caledonia is 39 (according to the 2010 census).

Alice McConnell Bender was born around 1904 to John and Anna Bender. Not much is known at the time of processing about her life. In 1910 the family lived in Harwood, North Dakota then in 1911 her father died and by 1920 the rest of the family is living in Fargo. Alice became a student at North Dakota Agricultural College and wrote this thesis while there.
