Biographical / Historical

Wallace Gilbert Rice was born on August 15, 1873 in Augusta, Maine. He was the son of Joseph and Lucy (Safford) Rice. He came to Fargo, with his parents in 1881. He served as a volunteer firefighter with the Yerxa Hose Company, and fought the Fargo fire of 1893. He served as fire chief from 1903-1904. He worked for his father as a funeral director, and then went into the decorating business. He retired in 1951.



In 1906, he married Emma Holmberg, and they had one daughter Vivian. Mrs. Rice died in 1956. Wallace Rice died at the Odd Fellows Home in Devils Lake, North Dakota on September 4, 1964. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo.
