Biography

Walter Lincoln Stockwell was born in Anoka, Minnesota on January 12, 1868 to Sylvanus and Charlotte Stockwell. He graduated from Anoka High School in 1889, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1889 with a bachelor of science degree. He came to Fargo, North Dakota in 1889 as a messenger of the American Express company. He served as a principal of the schools at St. Thomas, North Dakota, and then in Grafton, where he served as superintendent of schools. He organized and taught at the first summer school at the University of North Dakota. He served as president of the North Dakota Education Association in 1899. In 1902 he was elected as state superintendent of Public Instruction, and served in that position from 1903-1911. In 1910 he moved to Fargo in 1910 to serve as the grand secretary and recorder for the Masonic Grand Lodge. He was the president of the Fargo School of Religious Education from 1932 to 1950. He was chairman and Fargo city library board member for 38 years. He also served as president of the of the Northern School Supply Company. On June 27, 1894, he married Helen Huntington Tombs, and they had two children, Walter and Helen. He died on December 4, 1950 in Fargo.
