Photocopies of his typed articles: "Large farms and ranches" and "The Chicago ranch." "Large farms and ranches" (8 leaves) concerns the large farming operations in southern Stutsman, LaMoure, and Logan counties in N.D. "The Chicago ranch" (34 leaves) concerns a large farm located near Montpelier, N.D. An introductory note (3 leaves) to both articles is also included. Papers are based on information from newspaper clippings and interviews with former employee, Sam Kenny. Includes mention of visitors to the ranches, the owners, their social and business activities as mentioned in area newspapers, the contrasts between the bonanza farm lands and this area, and the sale of the Chicago Ranch by Weller Van Hook to Fred and Mary Gray Lee.

Biography
William Lawrence Cofell was born November 22, 1919 to Floyd William and Elizabeth Henrietta (Lawrence) Cofell in Edgeley, North Dakota. He lived in Montpelier, North Dakota from 1923 to 1941 when he joined the Army. He served in the China-Burma-India theater as an Army weatherman and teletype technician. After returning to the U.S. he went to the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University on the GI Bill. It is there that he was set up on a blind date with Lorraine Helen Westrup who would be come his wife on June 16, 1951.
After graduation in 1949, William taught high school in Melrose, Minnesota before completing his master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. He would return to St. John’s to teach in the Education department. He would continue to teach until he retired in 1986. He served on several committees and was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Collegeville, Minnesota.
He and Lorraine had seven children, Paul, Mary, Ann, Jeanne, Patricia, John, and Daivd.
