Fargo (N.D.) Ephemera Collection

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 1599

Scope and Content

The Fargo, N.D. Ephemera Collection preserves documents important to our everyday existence. Many of these items are often overlooked in the collecting and preservation process since they are common, ordinary items printed for an occasion and then usually forgotten about or discarded soon after. Such commonplace items include tickets, programs, advertisements, announcements, calendars, documents, posters, labels, etc. These items are important to preserve for they help to inform us about events such as elections, meetings, celebrations, entertainment, sporting events, and everyday occasions. All items relate to Fargo, N.D. in some manner.

The collection organization was developed in 1994 by intern student Renee D. Tribitt. The organizational scheme is based upon similar collections at several other archives. It is divided into seventeen broad topical and format categories. Depending upon the number and variety of items, some categories have been further subdivided. Oversize items are noted with the term ‘Folio’. If a subcategory includes items in both the regular collection and in Folio, the phrase ‘& Folio’ is given. If only the term ‘Folio’ is listed then all items are located in Folio.

There is a separate North Dakota ephemera collection very similar in organization, although the subdivisions many times are different, based upon the items in hand.
