Scope and Contents

This collection includes a copy of the book, Le Clair on Beauty Culture by Mm. LeClair and includes notes by Ms. Matson. There are also operator’s licenses from 1939 to 1955, a personal complexion analysis from Max Factor, a hairdresser’s examination review for the state board and a brochure for the New York Hairdressing Academy.

This collection also includes a photograph of a group of women that Ms. Matson worked with and/or knew. It has been separated out, and placed into Photo 536.

Biography

Alma Josephine Matson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 2, 1919. She was the daughter of Gustaf and Ragna (Pederson) Matson. Her father died when she was a year old, and she moved with her mother to Almora, Minnesota, where she spent her childhood. She trained at the New York Hairdressing Academy, run by Willis F. Walford at 109 Broadway in Fargo, North Dakota. She held an operator’s license for hairdressing through the state of Minnesota for several years as well. She eventually moved to Kent, Washington. She died on December 18, 1954, at the age of 35.
