History
Assumption Abbey was founded by Vincent Wehrle and was first called St. Gall’s. It was located in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Prior Vincent moved the monastery to Richardton, North Dakota. The name was changed to St. Mary’s and it became an abbey in 1903 with Vincent becoming its first abbot. The construction of the cathedral began in 1910. There were financial problems for the abbey in the 1910s and 1920s. Things eventually changed and two college seminaries were opened. These schools would last through 1971. The monks at the abbey today follow the Order of St. Benedict.
