Delta Kappa Gamma Fargo Beta Chapter Records

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 322

Scope and Contents

The records of the Fargo Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International concern primarily the organization‟s members and activities over the first 65 years of its existence. In particular, there are several biographies of early members, two scrapbooks, several “histories” of the organization, reports, and newsletters. A later accession (Acc. 2851) received but not integrated into this collection. The records are divided into eight series: Membership, Correspondence, Activities and Events, Subject, Newsletters, Reports, Histories, and Scrapbooks. The Membership series contains documents relating to members of the chapter. Primarily consisting of biographies and interviews of early members, it provides an excellent picture of the make-up of the organization in the 1940s and 1950s. The Correspondence series includes the chapter‟s letters and other forms of communication. The Activities and Events series is very small, consisting of the chapter‟s song and items related to various conventions. The Subject series is also quite small, and including primarily a folder of newspaper clippings. Researchers interested in articles on the chapter should also consult the Scrapbooks series. The Newsletters series contains the monthly newsletters of the chapter from 1990-2005. This collection contains approximately half of the newsletters published by the organization during that time, with about six issues for each year. The Reports series includes reports from 1942-1990, a number of which were hand-written in bound notebooks. These are extremely detailed records that include meeting minutes, notes on special events, and other reports relating to the chapter. The Histories series consists of five bound histories of the chapter compiled by chapter members from 1940-1990. Each compilation is comprised of summaries of the chapter‟s recent activities, lists and minibiographies of important members, reports from conventions, and other historical material. The Scrapbooks series includes two scrapbooks, one from the 1940s and the other from 1960-1961. Each scrapbook includes photographs of members, newspaper clippings, and other ephemera associated with the chapter. For a handful of additional articles, see the Subject series.

History

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International came to North Dakota in 1940. The Society established many chapters in the state at this time, including the Beta Chapter in Fargo, N.D. The purpose of the Society, and of Beta Chapter by extension, is to provide educational and benevolent assistance to “women teachers and students by means of founding scholarships for study, for developing loyalty and high ideals in the teaching profession, and for conferring distinction upon women educators of the teaching profession” (Beta Chapter – Brief History; see folder 1/1). From its beginning in the early 1940s, the Beta Chapter experienced solid growth. In 1942 the society “could be called early „women libbers.‟ In 1945 the chapter was instrumental in getting equal pay for men and women in our local school districts. In 1965 we were supporting state legislation for the same issue” (Delta Kappa Gamma Historical Review; see folder 1/30). The chapter has a long history of raising money to donate for educational purposes, including the sponsorship of professors at area colleges and universities and awards to students interested in teaching.
