Scope and Contents

The Doug Bakken Family Papers consists of papers, ephemera, and textiles from Doug, as well as his siblings, his parents, and his wife. The majority of the collection is comprised of Doug’s papers; this includes correspondence from family members and friends, greeting cards, blank postcards, Valentine's Day cards, school work from his primary and secondary education, as well as college papers and notebooks, various events he attended, sports clippings and program books, newspapers, North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC) documents, certificates, membership cards, business cards, scrapbooks, ROTC documents, financial papers, various brochures and maps, medical records, and a boy scout camping pack list. The various documents from his family members include correspondence, greeting cards, valentines, school work, books, financial papers, miscellaneous events, and scrapbooks. The ephemera collection consists of a coaster, dog tag, letter opener, a number of matchbooks, various pins, playing cards, a French's mustard recipe packet, small pox exposure sign, rifle targets, and directions on how to knot a tie. The textiles collection includes an NDAC freshman beanie, a civil defense arm band, a graduation tassel, athletic “W” letters, and a crocheted baby’s hat and sweater.

Biography

John Bakken was born in 1898 on the Ole Bakken farm, north of Bristol, South Dakota. In 1914, John graduated from common school, and later obtained a certificate for completing a short course at South Dakota Agricultural College. John worked as a water well driller for several years in the South Dakota and North Dakota areas. On October 14, 1929, John married Marie Folstad, and in 1930 they made their home in Wahpeton, North Dakota. They had four children: Darrell, Janice, Douglas, and Craig. John died in 1966. Marie (Folstad) Bakken was born September 1, 1909 in Colfax, North Dakota. She married John Bakken on October 14, 1929. She was a member of the Wahpeton School Board and the Richland County Welfare Board. Marie worked as a teacher’s aide in the Wahpeton schools, and was also a curator for the Richland County Historical Society. Marie died in April 1987. Darrell Bakken was born in 1930. He graduated from North Dakota State University and from the University of Minnesota. Darrel retired from the Indianapolis Water Company and currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana with his daughter, Dawn. Janice Bakken was born in Fargo in 1936 and was adopted by the Bakken family. She graduated from North Dakota State University. Janice died from cancer in 1971. Douglas Bakken was born in 1939. He graduated from North Dakota State University and the University of Nebraska. Doug retired from the Ball Brothers Foundation and currently lives in Muncie, Indiana with his wife, Jackie. Craig Bakken was born in 1949. He graduated from Macalester College and the University of Minneapolis. Craig retired from a Greater Denver internal medicine physician's group in 2013 and currently resides in Golden, Colorado with his wife, Jan. Emma Ruth (Heinrich) Sauer was the sister of Marie Folstad. She was born on February 19, 1905 in Wolverton, Minnesota. Emma was a school teacher until she married George Sauer on June 18, 1927. They farmed near Valley City, North Dakota from 1937 to 1956. George died in 1977. Emma died in July 1983.
