Scope and Content This collection includes documents and artifacts from Zona McArthur’s life, as well as from her parents. The newspaper clippings regard her friends and family, including reunions by her mother and coworkers, developments in Worthington, MN, where her mother was from, and Zona’s death announcement. The documents of judges include information about Judge Ronald N. Davies and Judge Paul Benson, both who Zona worked under during her legal career. These documents include appointment announcements and death announcements. The certificates include Victory Liberty Loans purchased during World War I by a relative, E. Miller. There is also a folder of certificates belonging to Zona McArthur's career as a shorthand reporter including: National Shorthand Reporters Association- Zona McArthur Certificate of Proficiency, Sept. 21,1952; National Shorthand Reporters Association- Zona McArthur Member of Good Standing, 1971; North Dakota Shorthand Reporters Association- Zona McArthur as Constitution and Bylaws Chairperson, 1986-1987. The collection also includes a scrapbook from the McArthur’s time in Alaska. This includes photographs and postcards from many cities in Alaska as well as some other group photos and documents pertaining to their trips.

Biography

Zona Adila McArthur was born on March 19, 1921 to Herbert Raymond and Mary Anne McArthur in Minnesota. She attended Valley City High School and Graduated in 1938. She then moved to Alaska to attend college and moved back to Fargo, North Dakota in the 1950s. Her family owned a fur farm and travelled back and forth to Alaska frequently. She spent her adult life as a Shorthand Reporter and legal secretary under Judge Ronald N. Davies and Judge Paul Benson. She won numerous awards and honors for her work and even served as a court reporter on high profile cases such as the desegregation cases in Little Rock, Arkansas in the 1960s. Zona passed away on March 10, 2007 at the age of 85.
